Thirty Years of Game Creation Journey: The Story of Andy
An expert with over 20 years of experience as an art director and character designer in the
mobile, console, and PC game industries across the United States and Asia. He has overseen and
contributed to the launch of several mobile and PC projects, achieving almost 1 trillion in revenue. As
the lead artist at Rockstar Games, Andy contributed to the projects Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead
Redemption, which won Game of the Year awards in 2010 and 2013, respectively. Andy participated in
and contributed to two of the greatest games in history.
As a child, Andy dreamed of creating virtual worlds that he could share with many people. This
dream led him to become a creator driving the global game industry for over 20 years.
Andy’s story begins in a small art studio in Seoul. In 1997, after earning a Bachelor of Fine
Arts degree from Sungkyunkwan University, he moved to San Francisco to combine art and technology.
Earning a Master’s degree in 3D Animation from the Academy of Art University, he gained tools to
infinitely expand his creativity.
His first job was at Art Deco Game Design in Korea. Here, he took his first steps as an art
director, building his artistic sense and project management skills. However, the true turning point came
in 2005 when he joined Rockstar Games in the United States. At Rockstar, Andy made a name for
himself by designing main characters for global hits including Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead
Redemption.
Following his successful career in the U.S., Andy moved to China, where he led the Global Art
Center at Yoozoo Games. As an art director on projects such as Game of Thrones: Winter is Coming, he elevated the visual quality of these games, each generating over
500 billion KRW in revenue.
Beyond game success, he learned to incorporate diverse cultural elements into games,
building a global network across Korea, China, and the U.S.
In 2020, leveraging these experiences, Andy embarked on a new challenge as the CEO of
Seven O Clock Games in Seoul. There, he established a metaverse and NFT studio, breaking the
boundaries between games and digital art and driving innovative hip-hop gangster projects. From 2023,
as the CTO of LIAISION, he led the development of new platforms, pioneering the future of the gaming
industry.
Andy’s career extends beyond game development. As a professor in the Digital Content
Department at Dongseo University, he dedicated himself to nurturing future creators. His leadership
and teaching shone through in numerous lectures and workshops. In 2018, he received significant
attention for his lecture on "The Importance of Innovative Design and IP" at an international conference.
Andy’s journey is filled with a desire for endless learning and growth. While he cannot predict
the future of gaming, he is always ready to embrace change and innovation.
As he says, “We have only just begun”, Andy will continue to challenge, learn, and explore
new possibilities. His passion and dedication have led to this journey, and the many stories he will create
in the future will continue to inspire game fans worldwide.
